80mph opt-out 'unnecessary'

Friday, 20 January, 2012

Welsh Conservatives have dismissed calls for a Welsh ‘opt out’ of proposals to raise the motorway speed limit to 80 miles per hour.

The suggestions follow the UK Government’s announcement to consult on a motorway speed limit increase by 2013.

Shadow Minister for Transport, Byron Davies AM, said:

“The idea of an opt-out for Wales - should an increase be brought in following consultation – is completely unnecessary.

“The potential for two different permanent speed limits either side of the Severn Bridge sounds overly complicated at best. Any suggestion that there should be a distinction between English and Welsh motorways, when we sadly have so little, seems to miss the point of the consultation.

“I fully support the UK Government’s proposals and will be taking part in the consultation.”
