Transparency required in AWEMA investigation

Monday, 6 February, 2012

Commenting on the continuing investigation into allegations of irregularity at the All Wales Ethnic Minority Association (AWEMA), the Leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Assembly has called for increased transparency from the Welsh Government.

The renewed calls from Andrew RT Davies AM follow media reports concerning Labour’s 2011 Assembly election campaign and the involvement of Iqbal Malik, the son of AWEMA CEO Naz Malik.

Iqbal Malik was fourth on the regional list for Labour in mid and west Wales.

Recent reports have also highlighted the Welsh Government’s failure to speak to the author of a report into AWEMA as part of its investigation.

Mr Davies said: “It is unthinkable that a thorough government investigation would not include representations from Dr Paul Dunn, the very man who wrote the initial report into AWEMA.

“I am also extremely concerned over what appears to be a distinct lack of transparency from the Welsh Labour Government on this very serious issue.

“As of yet, no ministerial statements have been made. In addition, it is now clear that the son of AWEMA’s Chief Executive was heavily involved in Labour’s 2011 Assembly election campaign.

“The Welsh public must have the utmost confidence in this investigation, and at present, I am worried there is a potential perception of nepotism.

“The First Minister must make it clear that action has been taken to ensure the Welsh Government is beyond reproach and that it has acted at all times to ensure that decisions have been – and will be - taken with due diligence.

“With this in mind, I have written to the First Minister today to express my concerns.”
