Action is needed now to combat huge financial pressures facing dairy farmers, the Welsh Conservatives have warned.
The NFU Cymru has today spoken of dairy farmers' concerns about financial problems in the industry, in particular the price of milk.
The Shadow Minister for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Andrew R.T. Davies, said: “Farmers in the dairy industry have been facing huge problems for far too long.
“It is crucial that supermarkets and retailers immediately step up to the mark and work robustly with them to ensure there is sustainable prices for milk.
“We are constantly being told of the health benefits of drinking milk, especially in providing us with a good source of calcium, and as such it would be a total catastrophe if producers disappeared.
“Without dairy farmers there is no milk. It is as simple as that."
“Action is needed now.”
Pressures facing the industry can be seen right across the country. Just recently, North Wales-based processor Tomlinsons Dairies Ltd entered administration, affecting more than 70 dairy farmers.
