‘Cautious’ welcome from Welsh Conservatives to new minimum alcohol unit price

Commenting on Welsh Government’s announcement, Angela Burns, Shadow Minister for Health, said:

“Welsh Conservatives are pleased to see that this Bill has recognised the 50p limit per unit, which was previously agreed by the Assembly.

“Alcohol abuse is a serious problem in Wales and we’d like to remind the Welsh Government that more needs to be done to help sufferers, in the form of greater investment for rehabilitation services across the whole of the country.

“While we have been cautious that this Bill could have unintended consequences - from pushing alcohol abuse sufferers to harmful, cheaper substances, or, potentially penalising those on lower incomes - we are glad to see the Welsh Government recognise our calls to implement a thorough evaluation of the MUP to ensure it meets is public health aims.”
