Conservatives to deliver new deal to boost cross-border infrastructure for Wales and England

A majority Conservative government will negotiate an ambitious Marches Growth Deal and invest in infrastructure to improve transport networks and boost economic growth across the Welsh border.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, launching the Conservative’s Welsh Manifesto in Clwyd South today, will set out plans that will benefit people living either side of the border.

This is part of the Conservative Party’s commitment to levelling up the whole country and ensuring that all four countries in our great union have the infrastructure investment they need.

We will work with the Welsh Government and councils on both sides of the border to negotiate a Marches Growth Deal that will deliver much needed road improvements, boost local economies and cooperation between communities in England and Wales.

Under Labour rule in Wales, crucial cross-border road schemes such as the Middletown, Pant-Llanymynech and Chepstow bypasses have not been delivered. The Conservatives are determined to change this and make people’s lives easier, investing in economic growth in these communities and helping those who cross the border every day.

Stronger cross-border collaboration will provide a major boost for communities in Mid-Wales that are already part of a dynamic economic cluster with communities across Shropshire, and for the Northeast of Wales, helping cities in both Wales and England such as Newport, Bristol and Liverpool.

The Marches Growth Deal will build on the £790 million that we have already invested into four Growth Deals, meaning that every area of Wales is now covered by a Growth Deal.  This includes £500 million for the Cardiff City Deal, £115 million for the Swansea City Deal, £120 million for the North Wales Growth Deal and £55 million for the Mid Wales Growth Deal, all of which are transforming local communities.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “With a Conservative majority government, we will improve connectivity and infrastructure across the whole of our country. This exciting Marches Growth Deal is part of that bold vision and will make a real difference for people on both side of the border.

“Labour has a rotten record in Wales and has let down people across Wales badly, from healthcare services to a lack of investment in transport networks. The Conservative party will put that right.

“But in order to unleash this domestic agenda and deliver our exciting plans for Wales, we need to get Brexit done, move on from the division of the past few years and get parliament working for you again. Then the Welsh dragon will roar louder than ever before.”

Paul Davies, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, said: "Thanks to the Conservatives, Wales now has growth deals covering every part of the country making it the first Growth Deal Nation in the UK.

"With £790 million committed to these by the UK Conservative Government so far, the projects supported by this investment have the opportunity to truly transform our nation and bring prosperity to every corner of the country."
