Heathrow decision a ‘major boost for Welsh trade & tourism’

Plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport have been approved by government ministers today; a move which has been welcomed by Welsh Conservatives, who believe that it could increase inward investment and improve connectivity.

A vote in the House of Commons is now expected to take place by the end of June.

Responding to the development, Shadow Economy Secretary, Russell George AM, said:

“The expansion of Heathrow Airport delivers vital benefits to the Welsh economy, and a third runway will provide a major boost for trade and tourism here in Wales.

“It opens Wales up to the rest of the world and with the UK set to leave the EU, the timing couldn’t be better.

“This could prove to be one of the most important decisions taken by a UK government in decades – encouraging inward investment into Wales and improving connectivity.

“It’s the right approach from a government that is looking to the future at a time when we want to grow international trade links, and open up new opportunities for a Global Britain.

“Doing nothing was simply not an option, and we must now hope that this decision also leads to progress on the Heathrow Spur.”
