Commenting on the calls from the NUT to delay the school curriculum overhaul in Wales – a move which has been called for by the Welsh Conservatives since last year – Shadow Secretary for Education, Darren Millar AM, said:
'It's abundantly clear that the Welsh education system will not be ready to implement a new curriculum by 2021.
'The recent PISA results confirmed Wales' position as the worst performing education system in the UK and placed us in the bottom half of the international league table so there can be no doubt that we need to see some radical change.
'But instead of pressing full steam ahead with a complex programme of reforms when schools aren't ready for them, the Welsh Government should pause, take stock of the concerns of the teaching profession, and work with teachers and other stakeholders to develop a realistic implementation timetable.'
