Minister must work with clinicians on NHS helpline

Responding to reports that the Welsh Government will be accelerating the introduction of a non-emergency 111 phone number, Darren Millar AM, Shadow Minister for Health, said:

"I welcome news that patients in need of health advice that is not immediately life-threatening will have a new source of support.

"A non-emergency phone number could also help relieve pressure on Accident & Emergency units, which are stretched to the limits due to Welsh Labour’s record-breaking NHS cuts.

"The Welsh Government must now work closely with clinicians to ensure the new line gives out reliable advice and doesn’t needlessly direct patients to A&E."
