N.Wales NHS: Minister must consider intervention

Commenting on a letter to the Health Minister from consultants at Ysbyty Gwynedd - warning of ‘a lack of confidence in the current Board and Executive to manage with appropriate speed, the changes necessary to sustain good health care in north Wales’ - Shadow Minister for Health Darren Millar AM said:

“This letter is a further cause for huge concern over the way in which the NHS is being run in North Wales.

“It clearly shows that the breakdown in relationships at the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board was not just at the very top – but also between frontline clinical staff and senior managers in the organisation.

“Given the seriousness of this situation and its potential to impact negatively on patient safety, the Minister must now give immediate consideration to using his powers of intervention to remove Board members and appoint a new Board to change the culture at the top of the organisation and address the failings which have been identified.

“This situation is spiralling rapidly out of control and the Welsh Labour Government cannot stand idly by.  The Minister must take urgent action to get a firm grip of the problem in order to restore the confidence of patients and clinicians in the region.”
