Quality of life in care homes review backed

Commenting on the news that the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Sarah Rochira, is to launch a review into the quality of life and care of older people in care homes in Wales, Darren Millar AM, Shadow Minister for Older People, said:

"I welcome the announcement of this review to assess not only the standards of safety and care for older residents in care homes, but also to examine their quality of life.

"This is a welcome step to aspire to the highest standards for care home residents, so we can ensure that all older people enjoy the quality of life that we would all wish for our own relatives.

"There are many excellent care homes in Wales which provide high standards of care, but it is important that we identify best practice and share it amongst other providers who have room to improve.

"I hope that the Welsh Government, local health boards, care home providers and other stakeholders will engage positively in this review and do all they can to accommodate an honest and accurate picture of the quality of life of older people in care homes.

"I commend Sarah Rochira and her team for launching this bold enquiry and wish them well in their work."
