Shadow Minister urges health board to 'find new solutions' over nurse rota change row

Welsh Conservative Shadow Health Minister, Angela Burns AM, has commented on proposed rota changes at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, which would see unpaid breaks extended for nurses working long 12-and-a-half hour shifts.

The health board, overseen by the Welsh Labour Government, has been in special measures due to consistent problems for the past four years. Mrs Burns said:

“While I’m pleased to see the board taking some initiative to address problems with under-staffing at Betsi, decisions mustn’t be allowed to impact on the extremely hardworking and already under-supported nurses.

“These members of staff have been subject to poor management and problems in their workplaces for years, and there are no grounds to see their good will and dedication tested further, especially when the solution lies in more recruitment and retention of staff.

“The health board must be better supported to find new solutions to move forward, without leaning heavily again on some of their most valued employees.”
