Welsh Conservative reaction to beginning of Bridgend Ford plant job cuts

Ford have confirmed that they will offer voluntary redundancy to both hourly and salaried employees – thought to number around 400 staff.

The revelation comes following news that around 1,150 jobs in Bridgend will bear the brunt of the car manufacturer’s plans to cut posts across Europe.

Commenting, the Welsh Conservative AM for South Wales West – Suzy Davies AM – said:

“Though people in Bridgend anticipated that this would happen, it remains a bitter disappointment.

“It has also been pretty poor form for elected representatives in the area to have heard about this through an online article, rather than through direct conversations or correspondence.

“The announcement about where a new generation of off-road vehicles is due to be made shortly so it’s not clear how these voluntary redundancies fit in with that.

“Sadly, the Ford workers will feel let down by the Welsh Government assurances about the sustainability of their employment, given only in 2016. Has Ford met all the Welsh Government’s conditions for support? I’ll be holding them to their promises of the same support afforded to Tata Steel employees such as retraining assistance.”
